Urge Congress to invest in homeownership in FY2027!

Congress is in the process of determining the budget for fiscal year 2027, which includes funding for affordable homeownership programs. The programs being considered right now are what allow Habitat affiliates across the country to produce and preserve affordable housing that meets the needs of our communities, but there have been proposed cuts to several key programs. We know that a safe, affordable place to call is home is transformational for individuals and families, and Congress needs to hear that this is a priority to Minnesotans.

Can you take a minute to contact your representatives to protect and expand investments into affordable homeownership?

Specifically, we are asking Congress to support robust funding in fiscal year 2027 for critical housing programs that support homeownership:

HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME)
Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG)
AmeriCorps Program
The Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) Fund

As your constituent and a supporter of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, I urge you to prioritize investments into affordable homeownership in the FY27 appropriations process. These programs are essential in ensuring families across Minnesota can thrive, especially in the midst of an affordable housing shortage. Safe, decent and affordable homes provide the foundation for success in nearly every aspect of our lives. Homes are essential for the health and wellbeing of families across the board, with profound impacts on educational outcomes for children, physical health, financial stability, and the ability to age with dignity. The US is facing a record shortage of starter homes, making the dream of homeownership out of reach for many, and housing in general is becoming an increasingly unstable burden on the budgets of hard-working families. In Minnesota, more than 1 in 4 people pay more than they can afford for housing. We need federal investments to address the shortage of supply and keep up with the needs of our communities, and this is an opportunity to do so. These programs have a proven track record of successfully helping Habitat affiliates and peer organizations with critical gap funding and support needed for the production and preservation of affordable homeownership. To accomplish this goal, I strongly encourage you to: - Fund The HOME Investment Partnerships Program at no less than $1.5 billion, and provide robust funding for the Community Development Block Grant Program. - Fund the Community Development Financial Institution Fund at no less than $324 million. - Fund The AmeriCorps Program at no less than $1.291 billion.
