One important way to connect with your state lawmakers is by calling them on the phone. Mostly likely, a legislative assistant or aide will answer and you'll speak with them for a few minutes. If not, you'll probably get the lawmaker's voicemail. You can use the script below as a guide for placing calls to your state lawmakers.
Introduction: Hi, my name is [your name], and I'm a [supporter/volunteer/donor/staff person/client] with Habitat for Humanity. I live in your district in [name of City or Town].
Value: I'm calling because I believe that everyone deserves a safe, stable, and affordable home. The need for housing is significant and growing, and the COVID-19 pandemic has only made things worse.
First Ask: Please support increased funding for the Family Homeless Prevention and Assistance Program (FHPAP), which provides emergency housing assistance funds that can be used for rent, mortgage, or utilities payments.
Second Ask: Please also make Housing Infrastructure Bonds a priority in the bonding package. We need significant investment in housing bonds to help fund the development of affordable housing and boost our struggling economy.
Closing: Thank you for all you are doing for Minnesota. Thank you for supporting affordable housing.
