St. Paul City Council will be voting this December on the 2023 City Budget. Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity encourages you to take action today and connect with your City Councilmember to support our affordable homeownership priorities.

Twin Cities Habitat is advocating for support towards creating the Inheritance Fund and allocation of funding for the Inspiring Communities Program.

In the Mayor's 2023 budget, he has proposed the creation of an Inheritance Fund to provide Down Payment Assistance to descendants of Rondo community residents, who were affected by the loss of their homes and businesses due to I-94's construction. Mayor Carter additionally has committed funding towards Inspiring Communities, a vital program Twin Cities Habitat depends on to produce new affordable homeownership opportunities. Dear Councilmember, I am a resident of your Ward and, as your constituent and a supporter of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, I believe increased affordable homeownership funding is essential for our city. Homeownership is the top way most of us can build wealth for our children and grandchildren. But with the cost of owning a home in St. Paul increasing by 38% over the last 5 years, the possibility of homeownership is slipping further away from our neighbors. Increased city support is vital to creating pathways for our low-income communities to gain access to affordable homeownership. This is why I ask for your support for the following priorities: 1.	Support Investment in the Inspiring Communities program. This investment will support the production of new affordable housing in St. Paul and will provide nonprofits like Twin Cities Habitat with access to lots and funding to create more affordable homeownership opportunities. There needs to be a consistent and reliable program within St. Paul to support the important work of creating affordable homeownership. I ask that you support this budget’s funding allocation to this program and ask that you continue to support affordable homeownership through consistent and reliable funding sources. 2.	Approve the Inheritance Fund. This program will take steps to make amends for the decades of racist development practices that caused harm to St. Paul families who were forced to leave a thriving black community during the construction of I-94. The approval of this funding has the potential to support multiple generations of new homeowners that will be able to regain access to lost generational wealth. I ask you to support the creation of this new program and provide new generations access to affordable homeownership. These investments will be critical to creating homeownership opportunities in St. Paul and ensuring affordability for our neighbors. Thank you for considering these priorities and I hope you can help champion affordable homeownership throughout St. Paul.
